We provide comprehensive psychotherapy services for children of all ages. Our child therapists have specialized training in child clinical psychology, which informs the assessment and treatment of our clients and their families. Our integrative approach is tailored to each child’s developmental level and presenting problems.
In order to design the most effective and individualized treatment plan, we begin with a thorough assessment of your child’s current needs. We gather information about his or her personal strengths, functioning within and outside the home, interpersonal relationships, and developmental history.
At Positive Developments, we offer a variety of therapeutic techniques and choose the approach that best fits your child. These approaches include cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic/insight-oriented therapy, and play therapy. Our warm, gentle approach helps children feel safe and comfortable as they begin the process of psychotherapy. The types of issues we treat include:
- Anxiety including Separation Anxiety, School Refusal, Phobias, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- Self-esteem issues
- Behavioral problems at home and/or school
- Anger management
- Conflict with parents and siblings
- Adjustment difficulties including personal transitions and family changes
- Social skills difficulties
Because we view the child as part of a larger context, we often intervene on multiple levels including family and school. We value parents as important partners in their child’s treatment. Together, we will actively evaluate your child’s progress and work collaboratively to reach treatment goals. When appropriate, we will discuss the possible benefits of reaching out to school staff and other treatment providers to best help your child.
We will recommend psychological assessment, further parenting services, or family therapy as indicated. Please refer to those sections for more details.
