Stress Less: Sleepaway Camp Strategies for Kids and Parents

Camp jitters setting in? In the months leading up to overnight camp, many children begin to have worries about being away. Although these worries are a normal part of going away, it’s best for children to leave home empowered with coping skills that will help them manage their fears. That’s where we come in! This year, Positive Developments will be hosting a sleepaway camp workshop for 8-12 year-old campers designed to teach and reinforce positive coping strategies. In this workshop, campers will have the opportunity to share their concerns and support each other. They will also learn specific strategies to reduce homesickness, navigate down time in their bunk, handle social conflict, and communicate with counselors effectively should problems arise. To conclude, parents will join together with the campers for the final fifteen minutes so the children can share all of the cool new tools they’ve learned!

Mindfulness for Men: Using Mindfulness to Manage Stress and Achieve Greater Life Satisfaction

Free introductory workshop for a 12-week group now forming

We live in a competitive, goal-oriented, and results-focused society.  These values inform our definition of success, both professionally and personally.  Sometimes the pressure of living up to these values leads men to feel stressed, anxious, depressed, or angry and can impact our professional and personal relationships.  A mindfulness practice helps us to free ourselves from the grip of the negative thoughts and emotions triggered by the demands of the modern world.  This group will be a place for men to learn and practice ways of restoring balance in ourselves and in our lives, resulting in greater satisfaction.

Who: Open to men of any age
When: Friday, April 29th, from 7:30-8:45 pm
Fee: Free introductory session

Helping Your Child “Keep Calm and Carry On”: An Anger Management Toolbox for Parents

Do you ever feel like you have to walk on eggshells at home to keep the peace or that your child goes from 0 to 60 without warning? If so, you’re not alone. In this parent workshop, we will explore how young children experience anger and how you can help your child express anger constructively. You will learn specific anger management strategies to teach and use at home including relaxation, cognitive reframing, safe releases, and problem solving. We will discuss what you can do to effectively and respectfully manage your child’s behavior in the “heat of the moment.” In addition, we will focus on how you can handle your own feelings of frustration during these outbursts and model adaptive coping skills. Participants will leave the workshop with practical, ready-to-use tools to promote their children’s emotional regulation.
